Mahmud Tarzi wrote;

در غربت اگر مرگ بگیرد بدن من

آیا کی کند قبر کی دوزد کفن من

تابوت مرا بر سر کوهی بگذارید

تا بار ورزد بر سر من از وطن من

Dar ghorbat agar marg begirad badan e man,

Ta bad borad boi mara dar watan e man!

An English translation very roughly:

If death come upon of my body in a strange land,
Who would dig my grave, and who would sow my shroud?
Put my coffin on a high mountain,
That wind takes my scant to my homeland!

Omer Tarzi answered;(*)

DEAR GRAND PA,

YOUR BODY IS IN PEACE AND SOUL ON A HIGH MOUNTAIN

WIND BRINGS BREATH FROM HOMELAND

THOUSANDS COME TO PRAY AND RESPECT, TO THIS LAND

Araam gerreft ien badanat dar daman o koh

Ta bad e Watan baz damad az taraf o so

Yade tu hazaraan konad dast e duaa ra

Ta solh e shawad Muzhdah, ba Mahmoud konad ro

آرام گرفت این بدنت در دمن و کوه

تا باد وطن باز وزد از طرف و سو

یاد تو هزاران    کند  دست دعا را

تا صلح شود مژده، به محمود کند رو

Your body and soul  were relax in this valley and the mountains

The home smile has soft breeze blow once again on you

If  you recall the memories of the land, thousands of hands  will pray you aloud

The good news of peace to Mahmoud  to take home (Afghanistan) with you

The foundation of Siraj Al Akhbar for the society in Afghanistan

BISMILLAHIRRAHMANIRRAHIM

DISTINQUISHED QUESTS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN ;

It is my privilage to talk to you,the respected audiences.

With this occasion I will try to give some words about the father of journalism, thinker, politician and man of letters as a grand son of this great man, Sardar Mahmud Tarzi.

I brought sincere wishes every respected member of MAHMUD TARZI CULTURAL FOUNDATION.

DEAR GUESTS,

1. Siraj Al Akbar, celebrating the 104th year, was just a newspaper in the beginning. But in a very short period of time, it became the center of freedom and indepenceny concepts. The concepts of free living and patriotism inside the Afghan people’s core became stronger with this newspaper’s freedom wind and turned independency thirst into a big emotion not only in Afghanistan but also in India,a British colony in Pakistan and Iran became a nation afterwards. Afghan nationalists took the new formation of the newspaper very seriously and started working to strengthen and distribute the nation and freedom ideas all over Afghanistan.

After this brief approach which showed the genuine side of the newspaper and the Afghan people, before asking you “what would be the first headline of Siraj Al Akhbar today if 100th issue was published?” I, as the grandchild of Sardar Mahmud Tarzi, the founder of idea and journalism and the founder of this newspaper, can say without hesitation that

it would be “SAVE YOUR COUNTRY”

2. Siraj Ul Akhbar, the most important attempt in Sardar Mahmut Tarzi’s career, started publishing in 1911 with the permission of Amir Habib Ullah. The aim of the newspapers was make sarcasm about the British pressure through India against Habib Ullah and start a create a formation against this pressure.

Amir Habib Ullah, in his very first speech when he became the ruler, the mentioned his longing for a modern country by promising “making the national union, leaving the foreign powers and underground business out and making the necessary reforms” That’s why Mahmud Tarzi worked as his unofficial consultant and thanks to that newspaper was able to stay afloat. The first prints were made by litograpy technique, the headline was made by calligrapher Hilmi Efendi. The second year printing machines were brought from Turkey and with tipography expert M. Fazili Efendi, they started using zincograph technology and continued business.

3. During this period, Moh. Nazif from Habibiye school, was Mahmud Tarzi’s closest aid. The religious articles were written by Mevlevi Abdul Rab. Later, Abdulhadi Dawi and Abdul Rahman Ludi started working and helping Mahmud Tarzi. In a short period of time, the newspaper was heard in Russia and India and started having journalists/offices in Gorki, Merv and India’s biggest cities.

The main question Mahmud Tarzi was asking to his readers through newspaper and his books was :

“ ilm chist?” (what is knowledge/science?)

he wanted to make his people understand that along with religion, science, technology, social science should be learned and performed. Newspaper was very useful for spread these to the public. With the strong publishings of Freedom and patriotism the newspaper became very famous and in a short period it started publishing geography and children articles as a supplement.

The newspaper gave all kinds of information about the world and life to its readers together with news from the country which helps an increase the number of intellectuals in Afghanistan. The children supplements started under the name of “Siraj Al Etfal” as a children newspaper.

This would help to enlighten the young brains with bright ideas and thoughts. Siraj Al Etfal would later on became a book.

4. The idea of Siraj Al Akhbar trying to establish in its teritory was modified in “Asia Belongs to Asians” slogan under the patriotism and freedom concepts. The main idea was to gather the nations under “one flag - one nation” in order to make them own their country. Afgan intellectuals and excited national audiences started to turn this into action. The close contact of Mahmud Tarzi with Turkish “Jon Turks”, the exchange of ideas between intellectuals, the steps taken by the Afghan intellectuals in order to combine western modernization with eastern culture and the efforts spent to bring the country as the leader country in Asia, all started with Siraj al Akhbar and Mahmud Tarzi and continued as an organized movement. Despite the situation those days and the ambitious efforts of some countries, Siraj Al Akhbar was very successful in gathering the people in the territory and making them own their soil. Even China and Japan were made to put a brake on their societies effected with this newspapers policy. India gained its freedom because of its societies wish to learn more, not to be neutral to the world and colony riots gained from the newspaper.

5. One of the very important contributions of Siraj Al Akhbar was to lead the free woman movement. Mahmud Tarzi’s wife Asma Rasmia Hatun, all his daughters including Khayriya and Soraya took active role in the movement. His wife and daughters were raised in recent technology together with language and social sciences and the help from his wife gathering the newspaper articles, translations from his daughters helped the newspapers receive sympathy and respect from local societies. Asma Rasmia is a leading example of the foreward looking women of this period. Born in Damascus in 1877, father was a respected thinker and the muezzin of Amawia mosque, Sheikh Saleh Al-Mossadiah, good friend of Ghulam Mohammad.

She married Mahmud Tarzi in 1892 at the age of 15. although she was not formally educated but received her fathers intellectual ideas, she had the courage to take on her duties as first principal of a girls’ school and first editor of a woman’s paper in Afghanistan, namely IRSHAD UN-NISWAN/Guidance for Woman/ while at the same time providing all the love and care necessary for her five sons and five daughters. She and her team of course, had the staunch support of Mahmud Tarzi. She assisted by Ruh Afza together with her husband and was published through 1925.

6. Mahmud Tarzi’s expertise in using his pen, being a literary genius and his skill in reaching the masses were the results of his father Ghulam Mohammed’s special attention to him. Ghulam Mohammed is one of the most important philosophers, writers and warrior in Afghan history. He has close friendship with the Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid and visited the Sultan in various occasions together with young Mahmud. He encouraged the Mahmud Tarzi to be raised with modern Islam culture and Sayyed Jamal al-Din Al Afghani was his tutor. Jamal al-Din, also known as the father of Pan-Islamic movement, was against dark fundamentalism and was an intellectual worked as a political consultant in middle asian and middle eastern muslim countries. Between September 1896 and March 1897, Mahmud Tarzi gained great knowledge about modern Islam, creation and world from this cooperation in Istanbul. His father Ghulam Mohammed was very pleased with these developments and enjoys being went through by his son and affixed the “the pen-name “Tarzi” (the stylist) to Mahmud only.

7. Siraj Al Akhbar and Mahmud Tarzi are two symbols would be known and remembered together. Just like the modern and bright people of those days created by Siraj Al Akhbar, it is very nice and important to see the contribution of respected bright attendees carry Mahmud Tarzi’s ideas and effects of Siraj Al Akhbar, today. Truth always has a effect and stays

8. It is very rare to have a newspaper take this much of an effective role in a nation’s destiny and preserving the unity. Mahmud Tarzi achieved this success with Siraj Al Akhbar and explained the nation that people have the freedom of ruling their own country and they should use it. The whole nation, with great belief together with the intellectuals and with Mahmud Tarzi, faced the great change.

9. Mahmud Tarzi was in effort to create a strong and shrewd ruler together with a sharing management mechanism. This would happen by the management units chosen by the public. Mahmud Tarzi knew that this would be the only way to fight with the colonial anglo saxon forces who bother them. He knew very well that these forces would enter the country with force and discipline even if a small compromise, in other words a management failure, is made. He received acceptance for his struggles from the Amir Habib Ullah a certain period.

That’s what he used his newspaper to distributed along the country with national unity, one nation, one flag subjects. He could only show to everyone that with this kind of movement, long-term peace investments can be made with a regular management system, fight against local and foreign terrorism can be continued.

Dear Respected Guests, Ladies, Gentlemen

I am very pleased to share this important event with you although I am far away. But I am sure our hearts gives one single message to each other and all around the world

PEOPLE OF Afghanistan deserve better life.

Thank you very much for given me this opportunity to give my speech. I brought sincere wishes of members of MAHMUD TARZI CULTURAL FOUNDATION AND FAMILY.

God save our watan and people of Afghanistan.

OMER TARZI

PRESIDENT OF MAHMUD TARZI CULTURAL FOUNDATION

Speech of H.E. Sayyed Makhdoom Raheen for the 72nd Memorial Day of Sardar Mahmud Beg Tarzi at Eyyubsultan Cemetery, Istanbul, Turkiye.

Today we are all here to pay our respects to the unforgettable man of letters and poet, Mahmud Tarzi. Today it is the 72nd memorial day that this so important personality of Afghanistan, died in this historical town.

Mahmud Tarzi is a person that he will never be forgotten. With his illuminant pen, he carried his ideas.

He was keen to introduce the reforms made in modern Turkiye by Mustapha Kemal Ataturk,in his country.

It is in this period that Ala Hazrad King Aman Ullah took the independence very gloriously in Afghanistan.

Also his father Ghulam Mohammad Tarzi was so attached to this country that he chose to pass his years of exile in the Ottoman teritory during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid.

Even today the Afghan nation who is in a new era of reconstruction, takes many ideas from the Turkish Republic.

The Minister of Tourism&Culture dr. Sayyed Makhdoom Raheen placed a wreath of flowers to Mahmud Tarzi's tomb, surrounded by Turkish diplomats, friends and members of family as Pcess Nagia, daughter of King Aman Ullah, H.E. dr M.Amin Farhang, Minister of Economy of Afghanistan , Sardar Omer Tarzi, president of Mahmud Tarzi Cultural Foundation(MTCF),mr. "the speech"

23 November 2003, Istanbul

Honorable guests and valuable family members,

Today we gathered here to remember the Great Afghan, a political genius who gave his name to a period with his work for his country's independence and awakening.

Mahmud Tarzi is a respectful nationalist, the founder of national education system and the father of journalism in his country. He created a nation with the conciousness of " one country, one nation " and later he became a reference for all local and foreign international forums. In the years of 1900,this great master made a social and scholary revolution by publishing the newspaper'' Serac-ul Ahbar " with the knowledge he inherited from his father.

In October 2003, I visited Afghanistan with my sister,Princess Leyla D'Afghanistan and observed the growing love and respect for Mahmud Tarzi and his son in law ; King Aman Ullah Han ,starting from the airport and getting stronger throughout our stay in Kabul. They are symbols of modernisation, respect, power and resistance against slavery who succeeded to have " freedom " in Afghanistan.

I am sure, we will visit our fatherland more often and take part in solving its problems and helping its construction. Today we are happy to start this mission in front of the young generation and I hope you will take over this mission and continue with better awareness.

We wish blessing from the great architect of the universe for all the deceassed members of our family and strength and health to those living.

We are proud to be the members of his family and to carry his name.

ÖMER TARZİ
